Resources for Grownups
Raising and teaching children is hard.
Childhood development is a long-term process that involves constant change. Trouble sleeping or irritability can be a normal developmental phases or something more serious. When children are troubled, they can't always explain how they feel or describe what is influencing their bad behavior. Children can develop the same mental health conditions as adults, yet their symptoms may be different, thus harder for supporting adults to recognize.
Have you noticed a change in your child’s mood or behavior? Encourage your child to talk with you about their feelings. Listening and showing that you care can comfort your child if something is bothering them. Try to determine if their emotions are coming from a single event or an on-going problem like bullying.
If you’re not sure how to talk with your child about mental health struggles, here are some ideas that might help:
“I noticed you seem sad, how can I help?” Your child is more likely to talk openly if you don’t judge them or over-react to what they tell you.
“It’s OK to feel sad/scared/worried.” Reiterate that other kids—and grownups—also feel sad, scared, or worried sometimes.
“Sharing personal thoughts can be scary. I’m ready to listen whenever you’re ready to talk.” Validate their concern, let them know that talking with a trusted adult can help them know what to do.
When To Seek Professional Help
Seek professional help if your child’s behavior persists for a few weeks or longer, causes distress, interferes with daily life, or if the child talks of hurting themselves or someone else. Professional therapy may help the child better process their emotions, reframe their thinking, and practice new coping mechanisms. A therapist will evaluate your child’s strengths and struggles to determine which treatment options would have the greatest impact on their mental health.
